Bluff, Utah
Fish Creek Ruin in the Comb Wash. This was not easy to get to and that is why it was in good shape. There were more ruins but we did not get to them this day. I was extremely happy with this one I have to admit. The walk down the creek to try and find another one led us to a bit of a dilemma trying to find a way back to the trail. I followed a cloven footed path up the muddy bank, another sandy, steep hill, hacking and climbing through nasty bushes. Yes, precious, it was nasty and thick with undergrowth

First day of hiking was in the Lower Butler Wash. Lots of neat petroglyphs and the San Juan River was at our turn around point. That was a hot hike, Georgia got sick, probably the heat and her constant chasing the lizards did not help. We took it slow on the way back. Later in the week we did two hikes in one day first to the Fish Creek Ruins in the Comb Wash and then a late afternoon hike in the House on Fire in the South Fork of the Mule Canyon.

We had a great time RVing at Coral Sands Campground in Bluff. It was our jump-off base. We did a number of excursions this trip including Monument Valley, the Four Corners, Valley of the Gods, Comb Ridge, Sand Island with its petroglyphs, especially my favorite – the flute playing Kokopeli, Lower Antelope Slot Canyon, South Fork of the Mule Canyon(House on Fire shots were okay but not my best).
Bluff is a small town that we love and visit as much as we can. The Twin Rocks Cafe with homemade Navajo bread and local sausage/honey/jams, etc., and the Canyon Smokehouse were fantastic restaurants.

We didn’t make it to Butler Wash, but the lower wash, Sand Island, was loaded with petroglyphs. Comb Ridge drive had petroglyphs and deep sand. Glad for the 4/4 Titan. The hike out to the Fish Creek ruins was pretty rough, especially with a dog. The tumbleweed was thick after all the rain. She kept stopping and would lift whichever paw had the thorn. Steve ended up carrying her over a half mile on our return. That being said, the undergrowth was so thick we needed a machete. My guide in the Lower Antelope, Keanu, was very helpful at the end and pointed out the Lady in the Wind and the Seahorse. I got some pretty great shots. I highly recommend a trip to Bluff.

Donna and Georgia along the Butler Wash trail. She slid into a waterpocket at one point and Steve helped her out.
The sites had many Kokopelli as you can see in this panel. I thought they were harmless flute players, but no…

Would you look at those pieces of Ham!!! and the jar of honey for the fry bread was a plus for me.

Comb Ridge drive had lots of deep sandy areas we found. Glad we were in the 4×4 Titan.

Georgia got tired of the tumbleweed thorns in her paws and sat down on our return to the car. Steve carried her most of the way back.

I kept hearing the music from the movie Shrek when he is carrying Fiona, the princess. She did not like the Tumbleweed thorns. They were everywhere and not appreciated. “And what is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered…” –Ralph Waldo Emerson
Fish creek was not this deep in areas and we were able to cross once we finished the thorny hike out to this point. It was very hard hiking in the undergrowth.
